km2 vs mtr

There was a post similar to this on Pirate some time ago. In 2008 the Ultimate Adventure was sponsored by BFG and in 2009 was sponsored by Goodyear. More than one person mentioned liking the BFG's over the Goodyears. But, I suspect it will depend on what the terrain is like and what you expect from the tires.

I wheeled with both this weekend, and the new Kevlars out wheeled the KM2's in the mud and rocks. I was real impressed with the MTR's, they were always clean, even after going through a mud pit. My MTZ's were always full of mud until I got wheel speed up and then the mud would fling off. But then I'd look back and the MTR's behind me were already clean.

I have driven MT/R's from the highest altitude trails of CO to the deserts of UT to the door handle-deep swamps of FL. In my opinion the MT/R could quite possibly be the best tires conceived by mankind for off roading.

I have always wheeled bfg. They are good but I think I will be switching to the Irok. I have seen these tires perform better on the rocks than anything else.

Did someone spray paint 'Irok' on a Trepador? :p I've never seen an Irok hook up like Treps, Crawlers, or even TSL's for that matter.. I dislike the Irok. ;)

To the OP.. I love the look of the KM2 and have heard great things about them. Same can be said for the new MTR's.. Of the MTR's that i've run in the past, they seemed to be louder than other tires.. For instance, they were louder than my 38" Super Swamper SSR's.

I was in the same boat this spring. I wasn't sure which route to go, but I came across a great deal on the MT/R Kevlars and I must admit I love them. I have never been a MTR fan but I would have a hard time switching to another tire now. The sides bite into the rocks very well and they clean out fast like others have said.
Chalk 1 up for MTR

I think the only thing the IROK has going for it is it's price. Other than that, they seem to be a mid-grade tire to me. I'd rather run an SX or a TSL than an IROK (by far).

The IROK's are a good tire but, not a great tire. They are fairly cheap, light weight, and plentiful. I have always been a BFG fan for anything that will see double duty. Wheeling and daily driving. I have owned more than a few sets and have never really been disapointed. The last set I had really did not last as long as I thought they should have but, it was a heavy rig that only saw towing duties. Good luck with your choice.

I would call around and see if you can get km2. When I bought mine they were on back order. That way if they are on back order then you can rule them out. Also see what the price would be for both. I didnt want to pay 300 more for the mtr. I haven't had my XJ off road yet but on road km2 are great. I have a friend who works for discount tire. pm if you want his number.
