I have done most of the rewiring in this truck. It all seams clean. I have had a couple ground problems. I now run a 4g. to the block from the battery. And now a 4g from body to batt. When I hook up the clip on the alt, and the wire that hooks to the battery it shorts. I have tested and it's the field part of the clip that shorts. I have replaced the alt and it shorts out. I have blown my "motor" fuse a few times lately. If I am holding the alt, it doesn't short out. But if I ground it , it shorts. Am I needing some ground somewhere?

Well it's been a PITA kinda weekend.
the alt is a checker special, that the letters are in the wrong order, but there adapter makes them in the right order. so... The alt is right and checked out good. I changed the VR from the nipp. to the cheesy metal ones. I did it with two different ones and it shorts. Checked the grounds and sanded where they connect. The alt sparks with the key off, with the key on, with the motor running.
There are a couple other issues that i am sure are related. Well Now suddenly I don't have brake lights. When I turn the truck to just "on" on the key, it blows the 30amp "motor" fuse in about 2 seconds. I still have spark, the motor still starts and runs. But the second i turn that ignition on it shorts.
What would pull power with just the ign. on but no load on the motor?
The only other thing thats wierd is I have no blower for the heater, and no wipers....

wiring mess

My truck did the same thing. Try grounding the motor to frame, battery to motor and frame to body. I fought the same problems but i was melting the fusible links right after the battery. Try buying a factory alternator or a factory reman. I was told that the ones that need the adapters cause a wiring nightmare. Or you can do what i did and throw out the 20r for a small block chevy!!

Ok today I unplugged every relay I can think of. I still sparked. I still blew an engine fuse in 2 seconds when I turned the ig. on.
Well I pulled off the tape and wire covers on the harnesses to the alt. and reg. The wires looked clean as all can be.
Well I had the black clip female going to the black clip to the alt male. I had the white clip female going to the green clip male to the reg. The nipp. reg had a white male clip.
I switched the two and now it's not sparking or blowing fuses. But I have no idea if it will charge. The clips are EXACTLY the same, EXCEPT that on one side of the clips there is a single male to female connector. One has the clip high, and the other low. I know that sounds wird but I took pics. So when I switched black to white and white to black the one wire doesn't touch anything any more. It sparked before with the reg unplugged. So that elps illiminate that.

What order does your rig clip together? Also are ALL the wires there. I am missing a couple and can't find the other sides. What do those wires go to?

Here are links to the pics....
