Need help ID'ing this handgun

This has been in my family for a long time, and its fallen into my care. I have no clue what it is, I think its about 100 years old though based on the patent information printed on the barrel.

I'm not sure what the caliber is, I am not a big gun person, is there a way to tell?

It should say somewhere on the frame, maybe on the cylinder.

I looked and it does appear to be a .38
