New tires for the 4Runner; 38's!!

I picked up a set of Super Swamper 38x14.5x15 TSL SX's from the classifieds section and just got them on the 4Runner today. Man, that's a big tire! :busted: I had been running 35's, which were fine until I got into the big rocks. I decided I needed a bigger tire. Now I'm stock-piling Dana 44 axle shafts, wonder how many I'll need... :ugh:

I took the 4Runner out for a spin & was surprised at how well 38's ride & drive. With the tires aired up, I was able to get up to speed pretty easily. The ride is different... choppy, I'd say. But they aren't that bad. We'll see how they are when aired down. I might have to make a run out to 21 Road tomorrow & see how the new tires work in the rocks. I'm excited!

sounds fair. If I can get a few things addressed on my rig I might be all about that thing in that place with those people.

Nice choice of tire!

Why thank you!

I had a set of 37" MTR's on my old Toyota... these are nothing like the MTR's, heavy, lots of traction & BIG tread blocks. :D

I aired down the tires this evening & took it for a ride... I swear Big O put 50 PSI in the tires. No wonder the tires handled decent, they were hard as can be! After dropping the pressure to 12 in the front & 10 in the back, I took it for a flex test. The tires rode about as well as you'd expect from SX's... crappy! The tires rubbed about where I expected. Not too much on the rear, but a lot on the front firewall. I'll remedy that with my 16 lb sledge hammer tomorrow. :greg:

Here's some pics for those interested...

agreed. mtrs were great for a dd in college, but not for a mostly off road rig.

have you already drilled the spring plates further back? this plus rears. Now i have some trimming to do up front...

I have found the best performance for that tire is at about 4-5 lbs. Mine are siped but not grooved.

For now I'm going to run them a bit on the high side, just for the sake of keeping axle parts alive. I'm going to take it out tomorrow to 21 Road & see how it does, by leaving it high initially, I can air down & tune the pressure a little bit.

Are you still running the Dana 44? Chromo shafts & spendy u-joints, or did you get that 60 in yet?
