New Venture trannies - what oil to use?

What oil can I use in my NV tranny?

NV simply states 'one that is non foaming'. After putting in Royal Purple 75-85W, I know why they say 'non foaming' - the oil bubbles, volume grows and then it comes out the vent

I then tried RP's Synchromax, that is supposedly specially designed for manual trannies, and it shifts like S??? while cold - even when the ambient is hot. We're talkign to the point that while driving, going from 1 to 2, I'll almost be at a stop when I can finally get it from 1st to 2nd. So I just put the 75-85 back in...

I did notice that the tranny runs ALOT cooler with the RP in it than it did with the DC stuff. Used to be I could burn myself on the doghouse after a long drive. Now it doesn't even get warm to the touch - even when pulling a 3k lb trailer long distances.

The AX's I just used ATF+4 or 5....

The best stuff to use is probably the special stuff you have to get at the dealership, but I've also had good luck running Redline MTL. Both the Redline as well as the factory specified stuff are really thin- very close to 5W-30 in weight. Either way, you are looking at spending about $10-15 per quart.

NVG trannies will supposedly have synchro issues if non-approved oils are used.

As for "non-foaming", that generally means "non-detergent", but I don't know where to find any for a tranny. My pressure washer pump uses easily-found 30w non-detergent oil, but that's 30w. :D

Here's a good article with some stuff worth reading: http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmission/nv4500_spec.htm

OOPS I'm ASSUMING you are talking about a 4500. Perhaps a 5600!!! so here's more:

from dodgeforum.com:
for the NV5600 (6spd)
Texaco Code 1874 MTX
Mopar 4761526
Dodge spec MS-9224 oil
Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 engine oil

That ought to help you a little. :D

It's not so much the price as it is having a cooler running trans. Cooler means that it has less frcition and less wear going on. I like that :D BUT I do like having the ability to shift.... ;)

Maybe I'll try the Redline stuff next time... I do have 2 qts sitting here anyway that a customer bought for me to use, then I didn't use it (no sense in putting the good stuff in to break in a diff with new gears/locker and he told me to keep it since I used my own oil).

It's actually for a NV3550 (what the Rubicon's came with). That page that you found for Royal Purple show their Synchromax as an alternative.

Here's the deal. I thought I still had the Mobil 1 (which I think is what I originally put in it, not Royal Purple or maybe I used it in my diff and did put RP in the tranny?) and when I went to change it today, I saw a partial bottle of the Synchromax on the shelf. So then I started second guessing myself... Did I change it at my dad's and put the RP in? I know I was planning on it. But did I? I must have, because there is a partial bottle! Then I got to thinking, I bet I did because that's about the time that I noticed my shifting was worse (with the Mobil 1 it ony shifted hard when cold, cold). Now that I'm thinking about it, I think the oil looked like gear oil and not RP. Heck, who knows!!!!!!!! I know right now I have synthetic 75-90 in it (Mobil 1). So I'll drive it and see what I find. If I find it's worse, then I'll dump it and put in the Redline that I have. One of these days I will try the RP Synchromax in it again, because I'm a RP dealer and have lots of it laying around ;)

Am I screwed up in the head enough, yet?:rofl::rofl::rofl::ugh::sick:

I first changed to a 75w-90 and had the same shifting issues you speak of. I ended up using BG products syncroshift. I picked it up at the dealership. As far as I know they only sell to dealerships.

This stuff here?
While looking around, I've been able to find it on a few websites for sale... Not sure if it can be had lolcally....

That is the stuff. From what I understand they have the syncroshift (which is a conventional) and syncroshift II (which is a full synthetic). I have been running the regular syncroshift.

I found that most Mitsubishi dealers carry it as a factory fill and also sell it over the parts counter.

...And what are you running it in? Do you have a Rubicon as well?

I'll know more today when I drive my Rubicon again if changing the fluid made any difference. When I drove it yesterday, shifting got better as I drove it, but that is what it did with the old fluid, too. I think if it didn't help, I'll be heading to the Mistubishi dealer!

That's the way I undersatnd the two oils, too... I was reading on a Mitsubishi forum of guys usign the I and II, and liking the I better. They were saying the II made it hard to shift at high RPM's, saying it was too slippery and the synchros' wouldn't line up? The BG website states the II will last longer at higher temps.

12346190 is the GM part number for oil you are looking for ~$18.00/qt it's already synthetic, I don't know how it compares to Royal purple, but it is the lubricant that was designed for the nv3550, 4500 and 5500 transmissions. I run it in my nv4500.
