Nuts and locking nuts - just a quick question

So I got some new shocks and they came with a nut for the top of the shaft, and also a locking nut, like the ones shown here: http://zhenhua.en.hisupplier.com/offer-266536-Self-locking-nuts.html

I'm really not sure how these work. I'm assuming like a lock washer they go on before the regular nut, but which side faces the nut?

The lock goes on top of the nut once the nut is tight. It goes with the open side down (so it actually fits over/around the nut.) It fits over the nut like a hat.
