OrvisKrawlers 96 chevy standard cab shortbed build

A month or so ago I picked this truck up on ksl after selling my grand cherokee, the goal was the same as the grand, build a vehicle to go wheeling, take to moab and do some hard trails, be a daily driver, and be reliable, plans were for a dana 60 and a 14 bolt, so here is what I started out with
431945_10150893432470951_52488563_n.jpg
it was a pretty clean fairly low mileage truck with some horrible spray tint on the lights, the first thing I wanted to do was sand and buff the lenses and rip all the moldings off, here was the result

a few weeks after I picked it up I started looking for a 14 bolt and a dana 60, found my rear 14 bolt at a local junk yard, it was out of a 96, after making some measurements I realized it would bolt right in and the stock drive shaft would even work( with a conversion ujoint)

at the time I couldnt find a 78-79 d60 so I picked up a really clean '90 version off ksl after doing a little research and seeing that it would work for my needs

now that I had the axles I needed to get the parts to build them, decided to go with 5.13's and detroits front and rear, high steer kit from balistic and cross over kit from ruff stuff, and some SOLID covers from polyperformance, got all that ordered and got the axles put together

I was surprised at how easy they were to set up, only took a few hours, my dana 30 in the grand cherokee was a pita compared to these, anyway next I needed front springs, I went with 52" blazer rears, found them from a forum member on here, after I got those I was able to score a good deal on some 37" BFG dot Krawlers, then went and pulled a pitman arm from a dodge pickup, the taper for the tre is on the wrong side, in the past Ive used this arm and just fill the hole up a little with weld and taper the other side and its worked well, so thats what Im doing this time, just waiting for my tapered bit to show up
the time came this weekend that I would have some shop time so I got everything ready, went and got my steel for the front cross member and shackles, and shackle hangers, decided to do the rear first since it was just a bolt in deal and a shackle flip, here is how it started
b69e8563a486__1341623594000.jpg
I ended up taking out the chicken killer bottom leaf and needed a set of shims to get the right angle for the drive shaft after the shackle flip
d5cc014cca14__1341623831000.jpg
forgot to take a pic of the shackle flip, Ill have to get one later, anyway rear was almost done, I modified the brake line mounts to be able to use the stock brake line, and tomorrow I need to go pick up a conversion ujoint and bolt up the drive shaft
so saturday I started on the front

diff and torsion bars out, next was everything else

I had the privilage of wheeling with you Saturday. Very nice truck. Bumper looks great.

thanks, hopefully I see you out on another run sometime, it was fun, you have a nice rubi!

SOOOO last night I went to pull the truck in the driveway from the road, started it up and ses light came on and the trans is in limp, borrowed my buddies scan tool this morning and its showing a dtc P0758 code, which is supposed to be the 2-3 shift solenoid, I cleared the code, started it, came back on, did this 2 more times and it stayed off, drove it around all day, sat for a few hours, I go out start it again and the same thing, P0758, clear it start it comes on again, clear it start it comes on, clear it start it and its off, went for a drive and it is staying off, anyone have any expertise on this ?? thinking I should just replace the shift solenoids and do a fliud and filter change while im at it, I hope its just the solenoid sticking or something!

Transmission is fixed, got my parts and put it in yesterday,

started off by draining the fluid, didnt feel like taking a ATF bath so I drilled a hole in the pan...

locate the shift solenoids and unplug and remove the 2-3 shift solenoid (B solenoid) the one on the passenger side

install new solenoid

dont forget to plug it back in

I also replaced the filter while the pan was off, and installed a drain plug in the location of the hole I drilled, consisting of a nut bolt and copper washer

got it back together, filled up, nothing leaked, no codes were triggered when started and taken for the test drive

I love it, just wondering if you should have put the drain plug on the side of the pan. Wouldn't want to catch that little guy on a rock.

nah the pan is tucked up in there far enough that Im not too worried about it, the exhaust would be smashed before the drain plug ever got hit, good suggestion though, i appreciate it

might try and pull my front bumper this weekend and figure out what I want to do for a front bumper/winch mount, I think I still have enough steel left over from the sliders and rear bumper to build it, we will see..

well, didnt get anything done on this thing over the weekend, but was feeling a little more like working on it today after work, so I got a start on the winch bumper, it seems like it took forever to get done what I got done, but maybe thats just because I worked all day and went right into working on this after I got off, or maybe I was just moving slow, I dont know, anyway here are a few pics of what its starting out as

there will be more support added to the front part of the plate the winch is mounted on, I just didnt have time to get that done, and some tube will be incorporated into it as well, going to try to get more done tomorrow

Looks good man! I like it all so far, bummer about the trans but at least it seams like an easy fix. On your way to a great rig!

KM2's right? How are they holding up with the fullsize? I know they are still a little new. I tow as well as rock crawling duty so I'm looking for a tire that will give me decent road mileage...for a MT of course. I've ran Toyo M/T's and Wrangler MTR's so far and have found that the Toyo's beat the Wranglers. At least by my standards. I've had a sidewall puncture and a freeway blowout with the MTR's, great traction both on and offroad. The Toyo's outlasted my MTR's and I never had an issue with them at all. I went to MTR's because Toyos were on back order but I'm staying open minded about other tire brands.

actually they are the bfg KX krawler, they are holding up good so far, need to be ballanced again though, Ive had the mtr's and toyo mt's as well, I would choose the MTR's over the toyos if you are off road more than doing towing duty, the toyos seemed to be better for a rig that sees a lot of road and towing, I dont tow anything so I doubt I will ever test these krawlers in that area, Im already thinking about what tires I want to run next, kind of wanting to move up to a 38-40" but I think it would take a lot of cutting to clear a 40" on this truck

I'm on the road alot. Thanks for the advice. Bfg's have a pretty soft compound so I'll probably end up going back to Toyo's as I daily drive my junk. Moab, if you don't mind me asking, when are you guys going? There aren't enough fullsize rigs where I'm at and I'm getting sick of seeing TJ's and Jk's. THEIR EVERYWHERE!

Your box is full. So I'll awnser you here. We usually do the more scenic stuff unless we have a group decide they want to run something harder.
