I have lived here all my life. I grew up in a small town in the hills of Northern California with a population of around 1000. It was great, parents actually raised their kids in a way so that they had respect and common courtesy. People actually took responsibility for their actions and did what was morally right, and values were actually present in the society. That's almost completely gone, not just in the smaller towns but the whole state. The liberals from the Bay Area and Southern California have taken over. It's out of control. Most of the people I know have left or are trying to raise their family in an environment that is constantly fighting them and their beliefs. If your child wants to get an abortion they don't need your permission or to even tell you. They can leave school without your permission and go to have whatever done without your knowledge. They don't need a note or anything, they just tell the school that they have a doctors apointment and that's it. If you own a business and hire someone and they decide they don't want to speak english that's become their right and you can't do a damned thing. If you fire them or even suggest they have to speak english they can sue you and they will win. Libralism has destroyed this state and it's quality of life, so no I don't think choosing a place to raise my family based on it's conservative values is asinine.

To quote Michael Savage "liberalism is a mental disorder."

so besides complaining on a 4x4 message forum in another state, what have you done to change it?

What an asinine criteria for choosing a place to live. Please, stay in California.

Let me guess......

i think its a personal preference. i looked for the most "liberal" area of SLC when i relocated to utah. i had originally spent 3 days looking at homes in suburbs and wanted to slit my wrists. oddly, nobody seems to lack any sense of family or values on my street.

Unionmine, I applaud you.

If you can't find the environment that you believe is best for you and your family in the area you live, then leave. I agree that getting involved to make a change, like Goat was talking about, is important, in fact essential. However, based on what you expressed it sounds like it would be as effective as bailing out the titanic with a thimble. When in Rome do as the Romans do, Right? But what if you don't like what the Romans do?

My wife and I live in Murray (SL Valley) and absolutely love it here. You should check it out.

The thing that I don't get is how many people complain about the conservative-ism of Utah, yet they stay. It just makes sense to me to live in a place more centralized to your beliefs.

Im just looking for a good place to to live with good values. Utah is it see you soon
xoxo

Not trying to beat you up on this, but most of your argument seems like conjecture.

Did your kids get an abortion without telling you? Did you hire an individual and then they started speaking another language and sue you?

I consider myself "liberal" and treat my fellow man as i would like to be treated and don't try to ram my beliefs down anyone's throat. i really dont care what people do on their own time. its a round world.

tell me, how is that bad for your kids?

You're in for a rude awakening, I'm afraid. Everything you are running from is alive and well in Utah as well. The best you can hope for is to find a nice neighboorhood, and teach your kid YOUR values. If you're trying to find an entire city that shares your values, anywhere along the wasatch front will be a disappointment. You may want to look into a town called Hilldale, just a tad south of Provo.

Goat you made me think again about my last thought and I realized how close-minded it sounded. I love cultural diversity and difference of thought. It makes for interesting conversation and experience. However in defense of my kids, I would want them "protected" so to speak until they are old enough to form their own opinions and to reason logically. Until then though, I feel it is important to teach them in the traditions of my family.

no problem here

i totally support anyones decision to move where they perceive a better life awaits them. hell, the western united states wouldn't exist if that wasn't the case. i just couldn't get my hands around the liberals are bad for kids statement.

i spent a week with my uber-christian grandmother in newport beach CA and she had fox tv and AM talk radio on the whole time. all i heard was fear, hate, fear, hate, fear, hate, fear...fear....FEAR, coming from the entertainers. it was depressing and provided a good example of what is driving people to be so closed off these days.

I agree to an extent. yes, it is present here, but not nearly to the extent that he's escaping.

Yuck, you just described my mother. Fear mongering is so rampant on Talk Radio.

I consider myself to be a moderate. I stand for many conservative agendas, but not all. Neither my wife or I vote down the party lines. It's important to listen to both sides.

Here is my perspective. I loved living in the Mojave Desert. It was far enough from everywhere else that it almost seemed like it WASN'T Cali. I'm not from there, wasn't born there. I retired from the Navy there and only intended to stay long enough to get my kids out of school without moving them again. But, when I got laid off, and folks that weren't born here or belong here got better State benefits than I could, I started looking for work out of state. I wound up in Nevada before my company transferred me to Utah...

I spend about a month out of the year in Cali, and everything I've read (on both sides) is exagerated a bit. Both places have good hoods and bad, but there are really no bad cities. I just find it funny the Californians running to Utah and Idaho. They move in and love it for a while, then the same ol complaints. We'll be way to conservative, or there's a crack house down the block.

This is what makes our Country great, we have the freedom and God given right to express our own opinions, that is what I love about this place. I wasn't trying to start a rant on whose beliefs are right or wrong, I was just looking for suggestions on where to look or not to look.
Thanks Chad

I take it you're not LDS, from the "shit hole" comment. I guess I don't exactly understand what kind of a "chance" you're looking for, for her. I grew up here, not Mormon, and it was...interesting. You can't date anyone except the "bad" boys who aren't Mo, because their mom's would have a cow when you pulled up in your Jeep, then immediately tell their son that they really shouldn't be dating someone like "that"...*gasp*. If your daughter doesn't have some self esteem and a sense of her own self worth, she's certainly not gonna find it here. I'm just sayin.

Just sayin' that less than 50% of this state is even LDS....gasp. (I'm not, if you wanted to know)

You can date whoever you want, LDS or not. Surprisingly, the LDS ladies.....well, things change ;)

Oh, sure, NOW it's less than 50%. :) I went to school in the 70's lol!

And I don't agree that you can date whomever you want. I've got too much experience with this, personally and with my kids and neighbors kids too.

(I heard it was "those Catholic girls"!)

K, I'm done now. :D

I was wondering if I could get some suggestions on __________ areas. one of our main reasons for moving from California is all the __________ and there belief's and the lack of family values. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's after 2:00 am and I'm on my way to work, and I can expand a little more, but look at your original post and really read into it.

Where I drew in the lines, insert "Blacks", "Hispanics", "Jews", "Muslims", "Down Syndrome people", etc...

...and no, I'm not reading too much into it, but right off the get go you're stating your hate for a particular group of people, liberals.

Just so you know, I'm "liberal", raised in CA. I drink, work Sundays, have sex in more than one position, don't believe in god, and I live in Utah. Now tell me, exactly what are my family values? Think hard before you answer because whatever you say I guarantee you'll be wrong.

You sound like a 'my shit don't stink' punk ass kid. I've probably forgotten more about family values than you've yet to learn.

Rant off.....I've got a train to catch.
