This is what got me:

"Toyota considers this a maintenance item for the vehicle, much like replacing a worn belt or other part after a certain mileage," the spokesperson said.

Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't it a digital display that should be able to display any number? Not a set of gears that could break down over time? Seems like that should be fixable w/ a software update.

My he screen isn't made to be able to display a 3 in the first digit. They stop at 299999..c most of the time Toyota covers the cost of a replacement but it is handled in a case by case situation. Seen this 7-8 times.
