My father wants to "build" a server for his business needs. Is this something that anyone here profess's knowledge in?

maybe :D

whats he want to know? what does he plan to do with it (filesharing, email, web, accounting, load sharing, etc)? Whats he wanting to spend? Servers, built correctly, can get very expensive very quickly...but you can also build a server using desktop components, but you wont have the reliability of what you want in a server for business needs...

Mostly just filesharing. So that they can backup all their laptop data onto the company's server from different locations around the country. Is this something anyone on RME does as a profession or advanced hobby? Even if he buys a pre-built server, he needs someone to set it up and show them how to operate it.

Depends on how professional you want it. and how much money you want to spend.
You can do a scaled down version with going with xp pro and setting up shares that are accesible to those given that right on a huge hdd. You can by a motherboard with raid abilities or even get a card that can do that and that can help on some redundancy. Not the best but a cheap way. You can do alot more with a real server product from MicroSoft. It will cost considerably more though for that piece of software though. There is also UNIX and if your savy with that os then the options are somewhat endless.
This is a pretty open question, in regards to that and with out more direction on price, who is going to maintain it, and other small tidbits, this should give you something to think about.

The question here to start out with is do you want a Geo, a Monte Carlo, a Mustang, a, Corvette, a Grand Cherokee, a 250 Power Stroke, a Escalade, or a Hummer. I guess the best way to put it, is it depends upon what you want and how it will be used. After you have it, then you will need to support it. Just because they all start up, doesn't mean the will all accomplish the same thing.

Any idea on how much space he needs? (how many people are going to accessing it and what they are saving to it?)
Is there anything else he wants out of the server?
