Craig,

I read that spotters need DOT when riding shotgun, but what about the rest of the times? What is the standard method of brain protection?

Required while riding, but not a bad idea while you're on the course spoting.

Spotter ride, I get that, but what is the prefered method for just being on the course? DOT or will just any ol' skateboard helmet do? You'd think I'd remember that after covering many events for several years...

Running through the rules I found this:

8. Helmets-Helmets with chin straps are required for drivers and spotters that ride. Helmets must be approved for motor vehicle use in the
country of origin. US competitors must use Snell or DOT approved.

As BCGPER said, the spotter is not required to wear a helmet at all, with the exception of the DOT/Snell rule for a spotter who is riding.
