suzuki 1.6 conversion

My engine blew on my samurai 8 miles outside of Moab last weekend! That was the last straw. I have decided to go to the 1.6 tracker engine swap.

Has anyone out there done this swap? I would like to get any/all input I can before attempting this project.

My plan is to go with the Petroworks adapter kit-does anyone have this?

I was thinking of going with a newer engine-like 97-98 with lower miles. I have heard that trailtough is the place to send all the wiring to and the speedometer.

I was also thinking of having a 2” exhaust installed to handle the “big block.”

What problems has anyone run into doing this conversion?

I did the 1.6 8v with a 96 motor I believe. Really easy swap. Just a matter of swapping the block. If you are looking to do the 1.6 16v, there is quite a bit more to do such as wiring and all of that. You are better off to get the TT wiring kit if you go that route. I used the Rocky Road Outfitters adapter kit with no problems.

how much difference does just going with the 8v make? You are still carburated?

How hard was it to locate an engine? I have been calling around and can't find anything.

It was a bit better. It's not gonna be huge like putting in a V6 or something. I also did a header, 2" exaust and intake at the same time so i'm not exactly sure what I got just from the motor. I do still have the stock carb. Works fine for me. I got my motor out of canada. cost me 900 bucks but it had only around 15,000 miles on it. It was worth the extra money to me. I think you would be lucky to find one locally at a junk yard. You'll either have to find one out of state or find a rolled kick/tracker and yank the motor.

Hey Anyone doing the swap the best setup for a kit is definetly Petroworks. It aligns the motor correctly. Also the best thing in the world for a samurai is a 1.6 16 valve. Anyone that knows anything about wiring can do the wiring. Also if you feel like running the Auto or Manual sidekick trans. Check out OTTindustries.com. I am running the setup and it is ausome. Also it is amazing to see the power out of a stock 4 cylinder. Everyone I have talked to with much experience with the 1.6 16 valve says to leave it stock. No Cams or anything it is already a low tolerance engine. Don't take any chances. Most people that do end up with a mess. Good luck on the Project definetly the best and most logical swap ever for a samurai.

Ran really well. When we put the valve case on the seal didn't line up right. There was oil all over the engine. Fixed it up but still leaked alittle on the other side. Left it that way. So alittle oil smoke wasn't bad. My phone didn't work down threre, which made me mad.

saw a 16V sidekick @ PnP a couple of weeks ago, looked clean.

I went this weekend and the only one with a motor had

been hit really hard in the front, damaging

the block and other parts I need.

I will be installing a 16v in a friends rig here soon. You are more than welcome to drop by and see the progress.

I will also be installing an 8v in the wifes soon. The kits for both of these will be coming from Petroworks. I am trying to get hooked up on the wiring for both at the moment.

As far as mine goes, as soon as I find a 2.0 it's going in. The 1.3 has done very well, but I need more. I figured by the time I get the 1.3 where I want it I will be into it more than I want (for a 1.3). I like the hp of the 4.3 but I don't like the weight or the driveshaft configurations. The 2.0 will almost drop right in and can be tweaked with cpu, injector and intake upgrades

Yeah, give me a call when you start that, I need to see
in person to get the confidence to do it.
I think I may go with another 1.3 until I can
locate the parts for the 1.6 because I don't want
to be without it for the summer.
It sounds like you will be keeping busy during the next
few months. Do you think it will be easy to find a 2.0?
Is that still going to use the petroworks adapter?(2.0)

All of the 2.0 stuff will be coming from Trail Tough. I don't think it will be a problem finding a 2.0. When the conversions start I will let you know.

OH my a V-6 conversion is a disaster unless you use a Suzuki V-6 been there done that what a mess. Anywho the 2.0 motor's were not as popular for the conversion because no one made the kit for it. Although how exciting that they are now pushing that for the conversion as there are alot of them motors around. I have heard they are not as durable as the 1.6 but never the less ausome motors, not quite as snappy. I recently scoped out a 2wd Grand Vitara motor and trans. Thats the next project. Also found out the Klune-v on the samurai will bolt right up to trans setup of a 4wd Grand Vitara. Too bad I can't steal the motor out of my 2000 Grand because I would have to walk to work then. HAVE TO WRECK IT LOL

The 2.0 is a 4 cyl. the 2.5 is a 6. I've seen a 2.0 in a sami and it looks like it should be there. This year at EJS there was a sidekick with a 2.5 6cyl that looked equally impressive. The kits are out there, but a little spendy. The 2.0 kit runs $1250.00 not including engine. With that you get mounts, adapter ring, radiator, harness and speedo conversion, hoses and some other misc. goodies.

O.K...........I totally punked out,
but it wasn't my fault. I could pass up
the deal on a rebuilt tranny and 1.3 motor
with under 100k miles.
I told myself that Iwould just listen to
it run and think about it for a few days-2 hours
later it's in the trunk & passenger seat of my escort.
2 days later it's installed and running strong.

I'm still keeping my eye out for the 1.6, but atleast
I can still play while i wait.
