Thoughts on 3.3l Toyota V6

I am looking at buying a 2004 highlander with 96k on it. But researching the engine the 3.3l V6 have had some issues with oil sludge. Found a website dedicated to complaining about it with people saying it happened to them even though they did regular oil changes (3k-5k). I know there a lot of Toyota lovers here what are people thoughts? Is it an engine to stay away from? I believe it made it's way into several Toyota vehicles (camry, rav, highlander, sienna). Is it a real issue or not? Maybe changing the oil to synthetic would help?

I had a Sienna with it in, I never had any issues with it. Plenty of power and all I did was change the oil when the light lit up.
