does anyone know what the actual difference between the 4 cyl and v-6 diffs are? it seems to mainly be in the housings and the pinion bearings. could i put a set of 4cyl gears in a v-6 third member? any thoughts would be great.
also does any one know if toyota ever used the 2piece carrier in the 4 bangers or just the 6.

The V6 thirds use different carrier bearings if memory serves, as well as larger pinion bearings. They have more ribbing and are a stronger/stiffer casting than the typical 4cyl third.

Yes, you can put 4cyl gears in a V6 third member, it requires the V6 bearings (naturally) and an extra shim stack for the inner pinion bearing's outer race. (the 4cyl gears have a smaller pinion head than true V6 gears)

One piece 2-pinion carriers in 4cyl's, two-piece bolt-together 4-pinion carriers in V6's.
