Trailer Axle Bearing Setting

It's been a while since I repacked trailer bearings and since I've been rebuilding my flat deck I decided to check the bearings and grease, and I'm glad I did. Anyway they're going back together and I thought I used to tighten up until hard resistance and then back off a quarter, but that still seems tight. What do you guys do?

I generally tighten the bearings as I am spinning the hub to around 100 ft./lbs. then back off about a half and put a dial indicator on the spindle and tighten to where I only have about .005" end play. Probably a little more technical than it needs to be but as long as you have some free play you should be fine, what you don't want is a tight bearing. It can easily be done by feel but I like putting a dial indicator on just so I can have that repeatability from axle to axle.
