I have a 95 YJ with a np231 short shaft transfer case and currently have the stock ax-15 tranny, but have been thinking about swaping (paying someone) the ax15 for an automatic. Is there a direct swap without replacing my transfer case? Do automatic XJs and YJs also use the NP231? Is there a different automatic tranny for a 4 vs. 6 cylander?

A 32RH will swap right in. It's the stock auto tranny for YJs of your vintage. You may need to get different length driveshafts. I've been using a 32RH (basically a 999) in competition for two years or so, and it has worked great every time. No problems so far. Good tranny.
