VSS fault 99 xj, any experience?

So before my last moab trip the speedomoter randomly read 0 while going about 55mph. I figured that for some reason the pinion gear was not touching the drive gear so I dinked around with the housing and got it working again, it worked for the moab trip. I got in the jeep the other day an no speedo.

99 xj np231/d300

It did generate a fault code, p0500.

A few questions;
1. If the pinion gear is not touching the drive gear will it generate a fault code, or does a fault code mean that wiring or sensor is bad? (I suspect that I could have a wiring or sensor issue since when it first gave me issues the speedo would work then suddenly not work, then come back. Also the wire is kind of stretched with the np231/d300 setup)

2. Has anyone had a vss fail on this type of setup? (it doesn't seem like the sensor fails very often)

3. Any experiences anybody has had fixing a vss fault code on this era of jeep might help give me a place to start.

Thanks
Nathan
