Montero on Kane Creek trail....

That thing is going to be a nightmare to recover. It is completely full of sand. Is it possible to get a back hoe down in to it? Just to dig it out of the sand.

I could probably get my 2nd gen Tundra in there - we can fill up the bed with quite a bit of stuff.

I think the hard part would be getting it in small enough pieces to put in a vehicle. Figure about 1000lbs per vehicle depending on number that can help.

With the bedsides off, the mog might be able to carry it if there is a way to get it up there - maybe 54" off the ground. We still might have to divide it up as I'm not sure the mog will make it up out of the canyon with more than a couple thousand extra pounds on the back. I guess you don't know til you try... Is one of the axles good enough to drag it out on if we chain it up tight behind something? Toad might be right in that we might spend a lot of time just excavating it.

I've never been down Kane Creek Road. Can you get a trailer into the area this is at? If yes, I have an 8 x 10 that will hold a few thousand pounds that I can drag out if the trail will allow.

No trailer from the bottom in. A few tight corners that have eroded. There is one pretty good climb if taken out to HITR. It would be fun to try. I saw it in Nov and it was full of rocks and sand

My 4Runner does a passable imitation of a small pickup, I can carry some crap in the back. I also have a small truck-bed style utility trailer I can bring. edit - just saw Russ's post, maybe no trailer. We might be on this trail in a couple weeks, I'll have a look and see if I can drag it in there.

My buddy works in the oil field in Farmington NM. One of the guys lost a superduty in a flash flood. They had a great big semi winch truck trying to pull it out. It was dragging the semi back towards the superduty. They had to anchor it with a road grader. I realize the montero weighs half of what the super duty does. The superduty was not buried nearly as bad as that montero is. My thoughts are remove the top first. Get half a dozen winches hooked to the passenger side and try to pull it completely over to get the sand out. If you could do that you could drag it out of the creek bed and torch it apart.

I can get a 5kw generator to run some plasma cutters if that would help and I was thinking the same thing as in cutting the top off and flipping it over. and then from there cutting it in half and the maybe in 1/4's if I took the top of my LJ I could bring an engine hoist in to lift with but I think winches would be better. Like I said I will be in there thursday and will take tons of pictures of the vehicle and the surrounding trees and stuff. Might even see if my 8k winch can do anything with it. This might give us a better idea of what will need to be done.

That Montero looks like a 1992-97 model. They weigh about 4K, without sand. It should be pretty easy to haul out if it is cut into bite size pieces. I think you can shovel the sand out and winch it into a better location for dismantling.

You got a large air compressor also? Leave the plasma at home and get a regular old hot wrench

Maybe I dont remember the whole trail well enough, but if you go in backwards it would be a pretty easy task to get a trailer in there.. Especially one of those larger military style trailers. Find a way to lift the montero up.. camper jacks and beams? haul the whole thing out.

The climb out of the wash onto the shelf has gotten very dug up. You might be able to get a small trailer down it. Getting back up would be tough

even if you ended up winching the tow vehicle and trailer, that wouldn't be bad.

once we have a solid plan in place we can set a date far in advance so people can make arrangements to get time off and I can get info to and from the BLM to get this ok'ed by them...

I think with enough of us there will be no need for a trailer. Several vehicles and lots of hands will be key.
