Toyota 2nd gen 4runner build thread

the time has come for me to modify my bone stock 4runner into something alot more interesting than just "another 3.slo runner." so started pulling some money together went and picked up some 80 series coils for the back and a full front axle from a guy up in Logan. front leafs hopefully coming in the next few days as well.. last night we pulled the rear drive line off to see the pinion paint code so i could get the correct greats for my front axle which just have 4:10s in them form a 85 toyota pickup. and of course there was no paint to be found on the rear pinion pinion. so in the door jam i see the axle code G144  with a little bit more research we found that 4Runners that could have 4:88 gears from the factory were 92-95 3.0 models with an auto trans stock 31s and a tow package.
all of the following i DO have. so if that in fact is the case. that is kind of good or bad for me as far as the front axle. 4:88's are a good ratio for spinning 33's or similar tire sizes but a 4:88 3rd member might be a bit of a pain to find for the gearing in the solid front axle. tell me what you think

How does the 3.0 run? You going to so a 3.4 swap :D

How detailed is a 3.4 swap for the 3.0? I've been thinking about picking up one of the second gen runners? It's hard to find a 22re. Can you still do dual cases? What trans is best, auto or manual?

Also if anyone has a 4:88 3rd member i will trade i have the good 4:10 one sitting in my garage

4.88s will be ok up to 35s. Most 4.88 thirds are worth a lot more than a stock 4.10, so you'll have to throw money into the equation.

Congrats on building your rig up, that's going to be a really fun rig when all is said and done.

The 3.4 swap is the easiest swap of all. Hands down, it is best to find a 5 speed when doing it. Anyway " hijack " over. I only bring it up, because when you do your SAS the motor swap is ten times easier.

i was told as far as dual cases go the way the auto tranny/transfer case is for the 3.0 models makes it so you can't do dual cases any 5 speed works in any situation.

so a little update on the progress of the build pulled the 3rd member out of the front so i could have it out and further inspect the condition of my front axle as well, so when the whole axle was pulled apart, we unbolted the 3rd member and *SHABANG* lock-right locker hiding there where spider gears should be. so regearing that 3rd member with the locker was a immediate possibility but the gears were a bit chipped up in i would rather just have a 4:88 3rd ready to go. so i pulled my rear 3rd member to count the gears to make sure of the ration 39 on the ring gear and 8 on the pinion = 4.875, the magic number so i traded traded that 4:10 locked 3rd out of the front for a open 4:10 3rd and an extra set of birfeilds, then traded that 3rd for a ready to go 4:88 3rd, so the gearing situation is good to go! :D pics of the axle work coming soon!

as expected fj80 coils do not lift the rear enough for 5" front springs. not to worried about it, chevy 63 swap in the rear soon enough.

My chevy 63 swap barely lifted the rear of my truck 2". I'd recommend running some blocks between the frame and the rear shackle hanger. I've got 4" blocks and it's only barely enough with an add a leaf.

scary driving without shocks, isn't it? :D

a little note of how the build went. originally had a 3" hybrid pack to use, it lifted about that much and would have cleared 33s easily, and they were a fairly soft spring pack so they flexed really good. but when the driver side was compressed the two tierods from the steering would hit each-other. (just a way of the Toyota gods telling me to getter bigger lift springs) so the next morning me and a buddy drove out to woods cross and got a pretty good deal on TG 5"' HD's with very little if not any use. so we rushed back to the shop bolted them on went for a flex sesh then pulled it back in to lift the rear. list your average fj80 lifted the truck quite a bit 3-4 as expected but as you can see it still sits low in the back. and fj80's are at the very limit of the stock rear suspension had to wrestle the trackbar into place and it dog tracks just a little bit, not really enough to notice. with 5 inch the stock oil pan clears really well as well as the steering arms, still have to make/get a front driveline go leaf springs in the rear and get my own high-steer :greg:
