Just a few examples

This may not be the exact model you're looking for (I'm not sure how you plan to ride it), but it's 2x the bike of that specialized. And I'll bet you could get it for $1200.

And this bike is much better than that specialized.

A little out of your price range, but this is 3x the bike of the specialized.

I don't really have a lot of knowledge with the new bikes and am just starting my shopping. My old bike is from 1994. Lol I had the Santa Cruz on my list of bikes to look at but don't kn W much about Giants or treks. Can you educate me a little and tell me what makes those bike better?

No bike brand is necessarily "better" than another, but some of the models are really great. I like the tallboy LT. It's good for taller guys, and has longer travel (LT).

You pay a bit more for the name of a santa cruz. Trek, specialized, Giant are the big 3 and they're pretty comparable. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Raliegh, jamis, or fezarri. They make good models every now and then, but you've really got to know what you're looking for to avoid the bad ones.

I have been leaning more toward the longer travel (120 and up) bikes and trying to read reviews although most of what I have been looking at have been specialized and Cannondale. I have borrowed a 130 mm travel bike and so far am really liking how smooth it is. But so far it has only been street riding.

If you get a 29er, expect this EVERY time you ride.
I can't even tell you how many times this has happened to me.

Plan on riding one today. My hesitation is reading about the 29" rims being more susceptible to bending off of drops. Not sure how big those drops are but I'm not a light weight but neither are you Kevin.

I haven't bent one yet, but I'm a weenie. I'm getting a little braver with the full suspension but I'm definitely not hucking huge drops.

Exactly what I'm afraid of. Kevin must not ride his off the pavement.

Off pavement? That's crazy talk.

image.jpgSo I picked up that Santa Cruz tall boy. Got it for a good deal. It's got a few cosmetic scratches but otherwise it's in good shape. Now I just need to get it set up for me.

So I have a bike without peddles. I've never had clipless so I think I'll go with platforms for now. What do you guys recommend?

Congrats troy, sharp bike! What size is it, and does it fit you well? I dig the way they set it up. Those ardent tires are fantastic. And I dig the short stem. How tall are you, 6'2" ish?

For cheap platforms, wellgos are good for $20. I dig most good, low profile platforms with replaceable pins. $20 wellgos will get you bY just fine for a couple years till you decide what you like. Get metal ones, not plasric ones.

$20 ones

A little higher end pedal, these are lighter and have better bearings.

It's a large. I think it fits well over the past week I have ridden about 10 different bikes and this one has been one of the most comfortable. I need to adjust the sag for my size and make a couple of other adjustments but other than that it's good. I'm just under 6'.

I ended up up ordering these.

They seemed to have some good reviews and weren't to expensive.

Those look like fantastic pedals. I think you did really well on that purchase. I'd be happy to help you set the sag sometime if you want. Any shop should be able to do that for you too for free.

I might take you up on that. Also the front derailer needs some adjustment. If you are willing and still have your tools?

ALWAYS wear a helmet. Spend a good $60-120 for one that fits you well that has good ventilation. A good helmet will be cooler than no helmet at all, as it will force air in and out and around your head.

Dirt jump helmets will protect your head from all sides, but typically don't have much ventilation. For mountain biking, I recommend one with a visor.

Everyone's head is different, and every helmet fits differently. I'd find a good shop, like Canyon Cycles in Draper, or Go Ride in SLC and try a bunch on to see what fits you well.
