Ford Build Thread: FrED the Ford. '98 E350 7.3 4x4 The More We Explore's Adventure Van

I found two 2005 f350 10.5" sterling 4.10 rear ends. One has a posi (62k mi) and one doesn't (unknown miles). Both are the same price Which one would you buy?

Does the posi actually do anything, or is it pretty worthless? If I buy an axle with a posi in it, and it ends up being worn, is it going to screw anything up to keep running it? I imagine the clutch discs will just wear out and it'll behave like a normal open diff. Are the ring and pinion gears any different than the open diffs? Could I still swap a truetrac in there?

Mine is worthless when it is really needed, ie, when one tire truly has no traction. If both have _some_ traction, then both will hook up. I've thought many times about putting an E-locker or something back there. Usually, I just chain up. Come to think of it, it's only ever been worthless in snow. In loose stuff, dirt roads, rocky, etc, it does great.

I've got an oil leak that I believe is coming from the rear main seal. Does anyone recommend any good shops to take it to? I realize it's not going to be cheap since they'll have to pull the tranny. I just want this 100% rig leak-free. Any recommendations, particularly in utah county?

Totally Awesome
Mine was doing that from the HPOP (high pressure oil pump). I can't imagine trying to find a leak on that van. It's hard enough to work on the engine in a truck. My truck turns me into a sailer everytime I have to work on it.

If going to a diesel specialist (like Gillette or G&R) be prepared for a multiple weeks out appointment, and big dollars in service fees. They are good at what they do, and they know it.

Unfortunately I'll be taking my 02 Duramax into Gillett in a couple of weeks for new injectors. Yes I did have to schedule 2 weeks out, but they were the most competitive on price that I could find.

I say 35's on the tire. On my 7.3 I went up to 4.10's and 315's, but didn't like the higher rpm's at freeway speeds. As I didn't tow much, I went back to the 3.73's. However, when I did tow, I cursed the bigger tires. If you are going to be towing often, be prepared to be shocked at how much those tires make a difference unless you invest big on power upgrades. I had high-flow intake and exhaust, but tire size makes a difference. I had 37's on for a bit, but hated them. Too big. My philosophy is get the smallest tire you need to get the job done. That boat will be miserable on anything that requires 37's anyway...

I know it's waaaaay to late to mention it now, but my VERY rough riding truck (named 'Bodacious', after the worst bucking bull ever) rides like a Cadillac when loaded up with a trailer. The Suspension is meant to be loaded. I imagine your van is very similar.
When Off-roading the truck, I air down to about 20psi, and it's very smooth as well.
Getting your van set up to drive perfect unloaded is going to change the loaded characteristics dramatically... So you may be going through headaches again when you find a trailer.
