I have a 98 Cherokee and the frame is cracked behind the steering box. It flexes and twists a little if you move the steering wheel back and forth. I have thought about cutting some metal plates to weld to the sides and bottom of the frame. Has anyone ever done a repair like this? Would it be smarter to bolt it instead of welding it or weld and bolt it? Welding it seems like it would make it more solid to me but I've never done a repair like this.

This is fairly common on xj's.

I have not done it but I have re-enforced mine (before it cracked)

I Lean (Carl) has cut some plates in the past, contact him he may be able to make you up some plates.

Post #109 I talk about my install of Carl's plate

My RidgidCo bumper has an outer plate so I only used one of Carl's.

Also I didn't weld in my inner plate (as I am looking at the install...)

My outer plate is welded on.
