Overspray on my Jeep

Ok paint guys... (Mbryson) :D

We are having the roof redone on our warehouse at work. The stupid roofers painted some black epoxy stuff Yesterday.... in the wind.... and proceded to cover about 20 cars (and one Harley) in the parking lot with overspray! :mad2: My jeep is an 05. It is now covered front, back, top, side to side, Mirrors, rims, windows, plastic trim, everything on the outside with black speckles of the stuff. They tried to downplay it. Said it was no big deal and the stuff would come right off. They passed out rags and a Acrylic thinner for everyone to clean their cars with. :ugh:

I tested it in a corner and it did take the stuff off. Lots of people used it to clean their cars, Most of them older. Some came out ok but at least one persons hood has swirls in the clear coat where their were bigger spots. What should I do? I called one body shop and thet told me not to put anything on it and bring it to them to fix.

Is their something out their that would be ok to use without damaging the paint? They said they would buff it off of our cars for us if we wanted. But I thought you were not supposed to buff newer cars. I have been thinking about calling my ins. Co about it???

Any suggestions?

I would tell them your taking it to some AUTObody/paint professionals, not ROOF professionals and your bringing them the bill.

The painting company should have insurance as well.

X2, I wouldn't touch it because you could 'damage' it more and then insurance may not touch it. Take it in, have it removed, take them the bill. I wouldn't risk it if I were you...

Go get 3 estimates from various detail shops or body shops, shoot the estimate to those responsible and have them pay you the average of the estimates. I'd try wax and grease remover and maybe a few other things before trying ANY thinner. You'll need to put a quality wax down after that, but you should be fine after all the 'gunk' is off. There's also some other tricks with some of the worst/biggest spots. I'd be glad to help you out........and we'll earn anything you can get from them.......

2005? I would be pretty well Po'd! With all that damage to the trim, paint, plastic, I too would take it to a body shop for estimates and call your insurance . The roofers should have some type of insurance or bond too. If worse comes to worse, put a claim on it.

If you do try to clean the paint yourself, use "Clay Magic". It's a clay putty bar that you use with an included spray and it takes most anything off easily with almost no effort. Meguiars has a similar product but I'm not sure what they call it. They're available at most any Autozone, Pep Boys etc.

I will second the Clay magic, I used it on my jeep when I had overspray on it and it took it right off. it takes all impurities out of the paint. Worked GREAT. :)

If it's paint, 'Clay Magic' can work great. If it's gooey-tarry stuff....I'd go with something else.

Thanks guys. Its a hard black epoxy type stuff. We tried some super duper cleaner stuff today and it did not touch it. I will head to 3 body shops tomorrow and get some estimates.

Thanks for letting me vent a little.

I dunno, owned a detail shop for years.

Yes you can Buff newer paint. In fact I would reccommend it.
Used to do it for the rides to be on the showroom. Then some Carnuba paste, and Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!

MEK is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy better than thinner, just cause it evaporates slower, giving you more working time/less damage time.
MEK or overspray clay and a good buffjob, and you will be okay.
The problem is finding a good buff job in SLC.
Detailing here is waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy different than detail there.

If it is gooey, tar based stuff, I would go with MEK or Gasoline/Diesel before I used clay. It works well with the harder stuff, like paint, but the petroleum based stuff that is on your car will disolve better with a petroleum based dissolver.

It made sense in my mind before I looked at what I typed, hope it was clear.

DO IT IN THE SHADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And you could do that buff job yourself, with a few pointers.
Lemme know if you want tips, or just go to a paint and body store and ask them for tips, and follow the instructions on the cans. 3M or Meguiars is the way to go retail, If you are hooked up with a dealership, find out if they have the Mark V truck cater to their detail/lot boys. If so, lemme know, and I will line you out with the right stuff off the truck. Best product out there.

Harbor freight has a sufficient buffer for $40, My Dewalt is Done, and I will temp replace with that.

Good Luck

They have insurance ( They have to ) Make them take care of it. I am a painter If you spray in the wind your a dumba$$ and should pay for any damage caused.

I agree... Take it to the pros. Anything you do to it now, may work good...now... But what about in 5 years? 10? Then what will it look like? Faded, etc...?

Update....

I havent got off work early enough this week to get the qoutes yet. But yesterday work tried to get the stuff off of one guys escort that was hit pretty bad. They used cleaners, clay bars, buffers ect for almost 8 hours and they still did not get the stuff off.

Looks like JT roofing is going to have to pay to paint a whole bunch of cars......

ok another update.

I just found out one lady's 2004 hyundai was totaled by her insurance CO. only had 22,000 miles on it. It blue booked at 7,600 and repair cost was 7,200. Evidently the paint they are using is an acid base epoxy stuff. It acutally ate into and pitted all the windows, mirrors ect. So they have to replace all that stuff too.

Progressive Insurance adjuster should be here later..... Roofing comany says they will not cover any of it. -_- :mad2: :mad2:

First call the cops and get a police report. Witness and everythign. Then get everybody together and get a lawyer. Then call Gephert! Was it the company that you work for? If not talk to them they are part reponsable.

When they say to screw off, that when I hit high gear, They did it they should pay. Your insurance company can raise your rates and it's your fault. I would also press the cops to press charges for distrutrution of private proprety.

Since I'm a little familiar with this type of event, here's the deal...
The contractor is responsible, no "ifs", "ands", or "buts". The end.
Approach them with the idea of settling out of court - cash deal.
If they are not warm to that, mention "your lawyer", that might convince them to go through with the cash deal.
If still not working, have an attourney send them a notice stating that if the situation cannot be resolved amicably, then expect "further legal action".
Still not getting anyhwere...most insurance companies have the legal prowess to pursue them for the damages. All you have to do in the meantime is pay your deductable and have the damages repaired while your insurance company collects its debts and you recoup your deductable. Your rates, in most cases, will not be affected by filing a claim of this type. Best however to check with your agent ;)

That's how I'd pursue it. (I'll still help you try and get the junk off if you want. Don't let it go to long, though)
