In early Sept, 2015, 4 of us headed into the Wind Rivers for the first time. We had never backpacked such a long distance in such a remote area. It was quite the experience.

Did I hear correctly.. ~28lb packs, 7 days and 90 miles? I'm a day hiker at best so from the outside looking in this seems very impressive.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggles with bear bags in WY :p Especially in the lodge pole forests--holy smokes those branches are up there! haha.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm no Mesha, but I try. Both Jentschman and I were at 29 lbs for ~9 days of gear for 90 miles. My wife was at 24 lbs. She's crazy, and she was the best hiker out of all of us. She didn't struggle at all. Fortunately, it only took us 5 days, so we were able to eat double dinners a few of the nights.

29 lbs is quite light for 9 days. Fortunately there were so many water sources that we never had to carry more than a liter of water at a time. That really helped keep weight down.

That is crazy, I went 5 days with about 65 lbs (which made 8.5 miles a day seem really far) I need lighter gear or pick a spot for my motorized transportation. Nice video (I could have left many things home (and I had stuff for my kids) but it all boils down to light, compact gear and multi use stuff. I need to be better at not duplicating.

Reducing my camping weight had a few unanticipated benefits

1) it's lighter (this one I anticipated)
2) it's faster to get packed and leave on a trip
3) I know where all my gear is
4) I know what state my gear is in
5) gear doesn't take up nearly as much room
6) it's less to worry about
7) now I can afford the good gear I really want. I wouldn't trade my backpacking tent for all the rooftop tents in the world.

all great reasons to do it.

I figure I will do it for me, and use the stuff i already have for the kids. I am on the lookout for good deals on the items you put in your pack in the other thread. Good inspiration!
