Jeep Project "Culpepper" 5.2L V8 Swap

I haven't updated this in a while, but I got it to run finally. Turns out that there must be some bad wiring in the original C harness of the Jeep. I didn't mess with it, but when troubleshooting I took the factory looming off. The injectors and coil magically started testing correctly.

I had to divert my attention to an emergency bathroom remodel and haven't worked on it since it started up that morning. My guess is some wires have thin insulation or something odd.

Glad to hear you got it running, how do you like it so far?

Oh, it only starts and idles at this point. Lots more work to do but no time to do it. Had to gut our main bath down the the studs.

I started my swap yesterday, I'm doing a 5.9 out of a ZJ 5.9 Limited into my '99 TJ. I pulled the motor out of the ZJ yesterday with all the wires attached to it. I unplugged the center plug and the right plug from the ECM and it pulled right out. Do I need the left plug? If so I'm screwed because it runs through the entire ZJ and doesn't just un plug. Can any of you help me?

Thanks!

You shouldn't. The TJ harness has some wires that connect to the left plug harness via the connections in the center of the firewall. The ASD wire runs there for instance.

Well I am finally making progress!! I have the 5.2 sitting in the Jeep,I made my own motor mounts, nothing fancy, but the shipping for the AA mounts was outrageous!! I am using the stock manifolds, seems to be quite close to the steering shaft! I also made up my own tranny mount, basically just weld the Jeep and Dodge ones together. Hopefully I will get into the wiring real soon,my local Dodge dealer doesn't seem to know what I am talking about when I asked for the ECM pin outs.I will be contacting another dealer real soon for these!

Not sure if you will get the schematics from the dealer. Just save yourself the hassle and go to alldatadiy.com to get them. Will cost you like $20 and you have access to both vehicles schematics and everything else you want to know about for a year.

Well I finally started it tonight, runs great, although loud with no exhaust!! I noticed that none of my gauges were working, hopefully its just something simple that I over looked!I will get to that in the next few days. Now I have to tie up all the loose ends, and install exhaust.

Well I am unsure on what to do with the wiring over and above the ECM pinouts. It starts and runs fine but no gauges,I am guessing that there needs to be some splicing with the grey connector at the firewall but what? I am unsure of,can anybody help on this?...........PLEASE!

Do you happen to have any pictures of said grey connector. It has been 2 years since I did it and I can't remember off the top of my head, although I really don't recall having to do anything special to get the gauges working. In fact the connectors that run through the firewall and connect to everything under the dash that run all that are the same harness as the 4 cylinder. When I did mine my speedo was not working, it was actually caused by the speedo gear in the transfer case and I did not have it in all the way to where it would get a reading.
What schematics are you using?

No I don't have a picture of the grey connector,I may not have to touch that connector,I have read so much info on this swap I may be just a bit confused...LOL.I didn't touch any connectors under the dash, they are all still Jeep 4cyl. I did plug in my 4cyl ECM and turned the key to the on position and the gauges all seem to work, although I didn't try to start it to check the tach. I am wondering if the ECM is my issue, the RAM is a 96 but had an engine out of a 98 in it.I don't believe the ECM was changed with the engine, cause the bolts didn't come out very good, actually one broke off!

If everything is working when you plug the 4 cyl. ECM back in then I would say all of your connections were done correctly and that your issue is the ECM. I remember when I did my swap I talked to Evan at backwoods and he told me a particular year of ECM to look out for and which ones to purchase. I can't remember but I believe he said anything 96 and older would have problems but don't quote me on that, it could just as well have been 96 and newer. But for some reason I believe it should be a 97 and newer. Maybe give Evan a call and ask him, he is a great guy and will talk your ear off, he knows so much about these that it is scary. You can find his number in the first few pages of this thread.

I may have to give him a call, thanks.I am gonna check over all my wiring. My buddy let me try his ECM from a 97 automatic, everything worked except the fuel gauge. We also tried my 96 manual ECM in his 97 and all gauges worked including the fuel! I will look a bit more on my days off.............working for a living sucks!

Well if it worked in his then I would have to lean towards something is not connected in your harness. Is the only thing not connected the grey plug? And was that grey plug from the 4 cylinder harness or from the v8? Sorry I don't have an exact answer I am just a little rusty, that is a shit ton of wires to remember after 2 years :D
I will swing by the storage tonight and take a look under the hood of mine and see if I can jog my memory a little bit.

Jeep is a 97, Ram is a 96,I think I need to look at the grey connector on the ECM,it appears the Jeep and Dodge wiring that send power to the dash are different.I just need to figure out what needs to change.

I know on my AllData info it showed my 1999 data port as being a mirror image of the 2001 Dodge. Turned out they posted an image of the code scanner end of the connector, not the port itself. I found lots of inconsistencies with their data.

Don't know if this is ok to post or not, but there are several of us on JF that have done this swap and we have a very active discussion thread going.

So a lot of people are doing this swap as will I this spring but was unsure of brand and company name wher I can get the motor mounts. And was unclear on the year of the donor I shoud use, I have a 2000 TJ with the 2.5 and auto trans (30rh) just want all my ducks in a row I work at a part store and have access to all the tools as my friend is a retired gm mech.
