1988 Toyota X-Cab

I've owned my truck for almost a year now, but I'm fairly new to the site. I thought I would post up and get some local opinions and support.
Owners Name & City- Jared, Logan Utah.


Make, Model & Year of Vehicle- 1988 Toyota Pickup xtra cab


Engine- 22re


Transmission- w56


T-Case- Gear driven top shift


Axles- Rear - Trucks original housing, Aussie locker, yukon 5.29's
Front - 1985 4runner axle with high steer and 5.29's


Suspension- 63" Chevy leafs out back, Toyota rears up front.


Wheels and Tires- 35" bfg mtrs on 15" aluminum wheels


Favorite Trails- Providence canyon, willard peak, little moab


I didn't know a lot about toyota's before owning this truck and when I first bought it I thought I had a decent platform. I guess it was a start but I want this rig to be very capable and not very problematic...

The main reason we ended up doing the black is because I was running out of grey primer and couldn't do 2 coats on the entire truck. You can paint your truck however you want, if it looks good it looks good... Where are you located?

I got my front end back under my truck!
Not sure if the shorter shackles helped entirely too much.. The front is still pretty tall
Anyone with lowering advice PLEASE chime in!!

Here's a few of the underside... I still need steering and some odds and ends...
But I might put the top of the shackles through the frame. A lot of toyotas seem to be set up like that.
I don't know if there's anything I could do with the front spring hanger to bring the springs up a little.
I'm not even sure what my front springs are... I like them, they flex good, maybe some allpro's or something? But I think I might end up doing some rear toyota's up front maybe in combination with moving the shackle thru the frame to get the height I want... Maybe even lower than the rear and I'll pull the over load out of the rear packs.

put the shackle threw the frame it will help pinion angle also,

and wheel it the springs should settle.

Those springs have been on the truck for atleast a couple years, I'm sure they're pretty settled.. But I do plan on cutting my frame to run tubes through it.

I wish I had heard from you sooner! I went and got some 86 pickup rears and 88 4runner rears.
Using 4crawler's awesome site http://www.4crawler.com/4Runner.shtml and good ol' pirate I came up with this...

Anti Wrap - 4runner military wrap leaf
#1 Leaf - pickup main
#2 Leaf - pickup mil. wrap
#3 Leaf - pickup 3rd leaf
#4 Leaf - 4runner 3rd leaf
#5 Leaf - 4runner main
#6 Leaf - Remaining 4runner Mil. wrap.

I've been prepping the leaves for this graphite anti friction paint I ordered, and bought some new poly bushings too. This pack seems to have worked decently for others so we'll see how it goes and if I need to modify it at all...

It's a shame about the beds being 2 piece, every single Toyota I have seen with those beds have bad rust at the seams, , oh well it wouldn't be a Toyota if it was perfect. Looking good man, keep it up.

Yeah and it's funny cause my cab is fairly rust free. Good ol' toyota bed syndrome.. I'll probably build a flat bed before too long.
People have told me to find a new bed but anyone with a rust free bed wants more than I'd like to pay, and the money spent can go toward some tube. I've got some ideas brewin' :greg:

I coated my leafs with EZ slide graphite paint. While these leafs dried I was hacking out the metal bushing in the spring eyes to fit the new poly bushings.

All I have left is steering and brake lines.

Little update, got my ruf packs on for the most part, I still need to drill for shackle tubes through the frame.
I'll have my box re mounting done tomorrow probably.
All I have left is front brake lines, and fluids (engine oil, gear oil) before I'm back on the trails.

Got my box mounted using the Front Range kit, after a little modification I got it setup how I wanted.

I can't wait to get out and do some wheeling!
My brake lines are hooked up, installing a fj80 master cylinder tomorrow.
And my frame tubes are in, just in need of some new shackles before I can mount the springs unfortunately
After that I'm gonna go get her inspected and registered for the year, and go for a ride :greg:

I got my tubes all welded up

And my shackles from davez put on.. now I gotta cut off my old mounts.

I think she's actually ready for some action :greg:

Thanks mayne. She just climbs and climbs and climbs. I actually don't get very bad axle wrap or the hops at all. I'm pretty pleased. Next time I go out I'll try to get some respectable video action.

I haven't updated in a while.

I got rid of my center console which was falling apart from the carnage and put this ammo box in.

And I picked this short block up for dirt cheap. My block in my truck is cracked... but it still runs fine and doesn't leak anything. I'll just start building this with spare time/money.

Not too tremendous of an update, but my truck is running, steering, climbing, crawling, doing everything I want it to.
I want to try and trailer her down to moab before it snows, we'll see how that works out.
And I'm building a tube bender at school, I'll be buying a die soon
