I agree with this. I do like opening up a legend class to a bigger tire. Its not easy to borrow tires. I know of a few people that would really benifit from this and a few people it would bring into the old school family! Im sure people are going to be ok with a penalty what ever it is just so they can be in a class that is funner for them!

What would be a fair penalty for 41" and 42" tires?

i would say over a 39" tire a 15 point penalty. i see a bigger tire helping in a few places but i also see it hurting in a lot of place. Lets look at most of the rigs that are running 40+ tires. They are big rigs and hard to fit between cones and into tight technical turns and cracks. A lot of guy build these big rigs because they love to take them to Moab and run trails. I think putting them in the unlimited class just turns them away from the event. Most of these guys with big tires are still running leaf springs and i don't feel they should compete in delta against my comp buggy. I feel a penalty is fair for class. There are plenty of guys that follow the rules and keep there rig to fit into a class so they are competitive and i respect that. But lets think about this. If we don't keep drawing in new people we wont have a comp to even worry about! I just love seeing new people out in delta and i want to do whatever we can to bring more people out!

Undre the current rules for Legend, a 39" tire has 6 penalty points, 40" has 9, 41" would have 12, and 40 would have 15 penalty points. Just to clarify, you are thinking that anything over 39" should be 15 points?

I think 3 points per inch is plenty. Tire size has very little to do with winning or even being competitive. In Delta, the courses are short and tight. A bigger tire can either be a big advantage for clearance or to big to fit between cones and you can rack up points in a hurry. Lets look at what can be done to have success in any class of competition.
#1- have FUN
seat time, seat time, seat time
good communication between driver/spotter
time management
strategy
finishing courses
keeping your junk together
Alot of people already know this but it may help out some new teams. You may have the best rig or biggest tire out there, but with out these few suggestions you will be less successful

Not sure how I feel about anything bigger than a 40" tire in the JK class but I've never competed before and I honestly don't care this year. Honestly most JK's with larger than 40's probably wouldn't qualify under some of the other Jk class rules anyway.

Luckily I think the most important part of this will be for me to have fun and I'll just show up to get my rig through the course with enough life left in it to drive me home.

i think if you go above a 39 inch tire in the legends the point penalty per inch should go up to 5 pouints instead of 3 points that sounds fair enough to me

yes i feel that would be fair thats a 10 point penalty for a 42inch tire like i said its can be a advantage just like a solid axle swap on a toyota or a different suspension on a rig i cant say if others agree though

I don't think that points need to step up to 5 points after 40's. Either cap it at 15 or 20 or keep to 3 points an inch. If a rig is running tires that big he is losing the advantage of the tires because of the size of the rig and parts it takes to run those tires. It's for fun and IMO a person that has a big rig like that is not as competitive on these courses, but I think they should still come out. A Burban on 49's is not going to win, but I bet he would have a ton of fun.
I sold my buggy and missed out on the last couple and have really missed it. I am hoping to be there this year and I can't wait!! Craig and everyone puts on a great event. It is fun. It is challenging but not impossible. I have been to some where they were hard just to be hard. They weren't fun. It is one of my most favorite things to do all year.

If it doesnt make it through with enough life to get you home, I will hook up the Dodge and trailer and pull you home
