Steve, what size pack are you using for your overnighters?

The biggest I have is 33L and not sure that will be big enough for winter style overnighters

I have a 55L pack, but I'm sure I could get away with a 45L pack. I haven't even stuffed mine halfway full yet (though I've only had the pack for a handful of trips).

I have some bigger packs you can borrow... unless you need a reason to buy more gear :)

My wife and I went snowshoeing to the Grizzly Ridge Yurt this past weekend. What a blast! This is going to be a winter tradition for us.

I've been snowshoeing for years, when I was single I had taken a few dates up AFC snowshoeing! That was a great way to get to know a girl, long as you had enough breath to talk!

I love it, the silence of the snow and the beauty of seeing somewhere familiar in a totally different state is awesome.

The last time we went out was above Ouray, CO on Red Mountain pass... the scenery up there is hard to beat, but the elevation wears you down!

Awesome pics!

Steve, I am looking to get a second pad and hopefully a bigger pack. I am almost certain I will join you next week. I will keep you posted.

I went snowshoeing yesterday:

Trevor, check that thread out, it's the same route we'll be taking next week, only we'll stop halfway to sleep.

Awesome report Steve, thanks.

Davy, I think I have the pad narrowed down to this one: http://www.amazon.com/Thermarest-Z-Lite-SOL-Sleeping-Pad/dp/B0075JUVAI
Also, looking to get this liner as well: http://www.amazon.com/Sea-Summit-Re...d=1388103479&sr=1-3&keywords=thermarest+liner
I have been looking at these two packs as well:

the jam is less than 1/2 the weight. So as long as you're not sacrificing any comfort or capability, I'd go with the jam.

I love the weight saving on the Jam, but worry about the material quality and stitching. The Jam is only rated for 30 lbs and I tend to be a bite of an over packer... So this is my dilemma.

What pad will that z rest supplement?

The Jam pack is an awesome pack. I plan to buy the Jam in the 35 liter size, but the 70 liter size is too big for the suspension. If you used your closed cell foam pad to stiffen up the back panel then you might be able to make it work. The materials are beefy and will handle as much weight as you can throw in there, but it will probably not be comfortable with the load.

You need to shave stuff out of your pack. If you need a 70 liter pack then you need to rethink and reduce some size and weight. Over packing is fine, it is nice to be prepared, but it is just as important to not over burden yourself. Really big heavy loads are debatably more unsafe than having less gear.

Most of the packs I've used lose a lot of comfort when packed to within 5lbs or so of capacity. If it's only rated to 30lbs then it may not be comfortable past 25lbs. 70L is a large pack and winter overnighters can fill it up quickly. What is golite's return policy? Could you take it out and return it if it's not up to snuff?
