You're not helping. :)

Actually, you are helping. I think a v8 4runner is the ticket. If nothing else, having the montero helped me realize I can live without a truck bed. It was nice to have all the gear covered during a recent downpour.

I'm checking out a 2005 v8 4runner this afternoon. the VVT motors supposedly get the same MPG with 15% more HP.

30 more horse power and 1-2 mpg better

Zero issues with the newer 2UZ (VVT-i variant), I'd rock one in a heartbeat in fact if my next mail travel rig will be either a late 100 Series with the VVT-i or a 200 Series with the 3UR-FE

It got expensive at times, but for both the burb and eXcursion purchases, I test drove several (15+), and calculated actual mpg when I did. I'd pick it up, top off the tank, drive somewhere, top it off when I was done. Then I had actual real world numbers for THAT vehicle. No surprises.

YMMV (snicker)

4th gen is a little bigger than the Monty, isn't it? Length/width/wheelbase?

Not sure. There's definitely less headroom inside the 4runners, which I will miss dearly. I think I'm going to miss the IRS and ground clearance too, but a 4runner with an OME lift should come close.

I tracked my wifes V8 4runner this last tank and it was 17.9 mpg. It did have a trip down to sandy and back to ogden but the rest was mixed driving.

Is this according to the computer onboard, or calculated by dividing your trip odometer by gal used? Supposedly the onboard MPG calculator is 2-4 mpg optimistic.

I've driven a few more v8 4runners. For the right price I'd still get one, but the few I drove were beat. I also drove a GX470, and I prefer that over a 4runner.

That's impressive, my wife could get that kind of mileage (18 MPG) but I couldn't... but I don't drive very easy.

Thanks. I tried something other than a toyota and found it lacking. I love everything about it aside from the little things that aren't working 100%, and the MPG.

@ greg, did you find the OME lift on your 4runner to affect MGP much?

Not that I noticed, we bought it and it had BFG AT's on it and left the same tires on it after the lift until the end when I swapped on KM2's.

My LX470 averages about 13 MPG.

That's better than the best tanks I've ever seen with this one. Best ever on road trips, all highway, observing the speed limit, has been about 15 MPG.

Wow... we've been getting 15-16 MPG average with our 250k mile 100 Series, hand calculated.

Fuel efficiency is so hard to compare. I drive like a grandpa and on my last trip I saw 7.3 - 13 (for a 100 mile stretch) with trailer, and up to 25 on a 60 mile unloaded run.
I see noticeable differences between summer and winter (summer = better), the amount of corn squeezin's in the fuel, ane most definitely, headwind.
Now I just turn off the fuel economy screen and relax..

I got 18.4 in my 100 series a month ago to evanston and around and back. All stock. Just added 275 70 18 's and lift and in the middle of a winch and bumper, I'm sure it will change. A lot of gx 470's run through the auction compared to v8 runners and 100 series, I looked at quite a few for a buddy for a couple months
