'96 Runner Build

Holy crap, I didn't think about that. I've got the 5.29 front and the 5.38 rear. Would that cause it? I know a lot of people run the same combo.

I think you mean 5.38 front and 5.29 rear?

I can't tell for certain if that's the issue, but it will end up putting more stress on your tcase than if you had matching gears, especially in grippy conditions. I personally would want matching gears for slickrock and grippy conditions. For mud and snow it's probably not a huge deal.

No worries, I didn't mean to correct you, I just wanted to make sure my brain was right in understanding which axle you had front and rear.

While I was waiting for the scouts to show up last night I started taking my dash apart to install my CB. I looked at a couple threads and decided I was going to mount it in place of the ashtray. I figure thats a great place for it seems I don't use it and it keeps falling open! Took it to work and cut the back out and mounted it in. Most of the threads I looked at did it a little differant. I didn't have a mounting bracket so I took the cover off the radio and drilled a couple holes and mounted it straight in.

Now I get to find time to wire it and run my antenna cable!!

I have been playing catch up reading your build. I dig your 4runner. Looking at it gives me motivation to work on mine. Anything you would change on it or any long term plans?

Thanks ghetto!! As of right now I am very happy with it. The only thing I wish was different is I wish I could afford a crawl box!! Maybe someday!

Last night I got to thinking about how to resolve my gear ratio issue and came up with a couple ideas. *Give me your thoughts

First, is run like it is until Kevin can buy parts for me to build my 44.

Second, sell off some parts I have from my Scout to fund the axle build. *(Not ideal, someday I would like to finish the Scout.)

Third, *Sell a couple axles of my dads and buy gears and an open carrier, then weld the spider gears until Kevin can buy my axle and I can buy a Detroit. (Need to get permission to sell the axles. but shouldn't be a problem.)

Fourth, *is open for suggestions.

Our weekend didn't start off the best. We planned to leave around 4, as soon as Aiden got out of school.

We didn't leave Spanish Fork until 6:00. 20 mile before we got to Price this happened.

We should have taken that as a sign of things to come!!

We got to that camp site 11:00 pm and set up camp. I think our Mountain Biking neighbors hated us!!

Camp site had ZERO shade, but we were in the trucks most of the time so didn't really matter.

The rest of the group arrived about Midnight. Didn't get pics til morning.

Friday started off okay. Although the 37s were not a good idea (had a lot of rubbing issues). We headed out on "Triple Threat" with the hopes of finishing it this time.

Just after the waterfall my uncle in his BAD ASS Commando busted his output shaft. We had to turn around and go back out. Damned Triple has avoided me again.

That night 9:30 pm, my other uncle rolled into camp with the great idea to pull a night run on "The Pickle". This is where I got into my pickle!!

Very first obstacle got me. and I quote from traildamage.com

"This is 50-50, the first obstacle. It is a series of big steps, and short wheelbases have the advantage here simply because of the placement of the steps. There is room to turn around at the bottom, if you change your mind about the trail. It's called 50-50 because it seems to take out or turn back about half of your group, and you make it up about half of the time. Your chances are about 50% here, it seems. This is where most of the breakage will occur if you skip Wishbone."

So far it's got 100% of the time.

Now the hard part is finding a case or shaft to replace it.

One more shot from back at camp. My cousin took a bunch more pics so when she gets them to me I will post them up.

How did the 37's work with your gearing? Do you feel you were able to turn them easily or were you riding the clutch?

Plan on going back to Moab early Spring with me. Our smallish group has completely that trio multiple times now with almost no issues (I chipped a ring gear but had no problem finishing).
