The Snowshoeing Thread

I have never been too warm while camping on snow.

I have used the xtherm and my 0* bag at -7* before and been comfortable enough, but not too warm. I don't need the second pad, but I figure it can't hurt to warm me up. Once my pack is loaded up I'll make the decision whether or not to take the second pad. I've never used two pads together before.

I'll be hiking a short loop up Granite Flats tomorrow if anyone wants to come. I'm not sure if snowshoes will be required or not.

I use the website www.geargrams.com to keep track of all my gear weight. It really makes putting together trip lists easy. I'm jealous of all you guys. I'll be on lockdown for at least the next month and a half. :(

Here's a cool tip for guying your tent in the snow.

No, you just need one pack. This one: :D

Less than 1 lb.

Here's my pack that I absolutely love:

and its smaller brother that I also want to buy:

Did you buy your pack locally or order online? If locally where? I would like to check them out more.

I am also really considering the Jam 50 from polite but it sounds like they will not have any back in stock until mid Jan

I've been impressed with the quality of my zpacks stuff. I wonder how the zpacks arc blast feels on your back. My Hmg has spoiled me. My packs that I used to love now feel uncomfortable compared to my hmg.

I like hmg's quality a little better than zpacks, but both atr great. I'd love to see an arc blast in person.

I think if I did end up getting one, I think I would get the zpack 45L arc. Seems like it would be the best compromise, size wise. The Jam is 50, and the other zpacks are 55L or 52L respectively.

remember that zpacks counts their exterior pockets as part of the capacity. I don't believe other manufacturers do that.

Interesting. I did not know that.

Part of this decision making is what is frustrating. I think, from what I understand, the only way to really know what size pack to get is to get out and hike and through trial and error. But how does one narrow down a pack that will work, without too many bells and whistles or not enough? How will I know I like/dislike a pack that is ~280 bucks vs a pack that is ~100? I would hate to spend the money on a zpack only to find out that I personally may not like it after using it.

Thats the way I feel about all of these new to me things. It is nice that so many here are willing to share gear so you can get a feel what works for you.
