My brother's wife teaches 1st grade. This week she told me she can teach kids to do anything, tie their shoes, write, read, wear a mask. But she can't do it if their parents tell them they shouldn't read, write, tie their shoes or wear a mask. That hit home with me. Our kids are watching for better or worse. I think kids being in school learning is far better than the alternatives for the majority of kids. Many parents, like Jake and myself work and/or don't have the ability or the training to teach their kids. If wearing a mask gets them a better education, I can abide that.
She also said, as you'd expect, ASD is screwing the pooch. Instead of assigning one teacher to do online and one to do in class based on registration for those options, they are requiring all teachers to do both at least at her school.

My wife is a teachers assistant at our elementary school. She has been in on a few different conversations. The amount of children that were actually getting work done under the online learning at the end of last year was crazy low. Many kids did nothing at all. I think this is a parent problem.. but either way, it becomes a child and teacher problem. I assume many many children will be very far behind others.

Additional issues with the online is a lack of consistency. Some teachers gave very little work, while others gave a lot. Just in our home for example, My girls could have everything done for the day in about 30 minutes.. while my son had enough work that it was about 7 hours of full work each day. This was very hard on him. And as mean parents, we made him do everything the teacher sent home.

My kids hate wearing masks. Hate. But they are more than happy to wear them in order to be back in school. They have been seriously sad and bordering on depression I think due to being away from other kids so long. Even with the amount of play dates and such, I just don't think it's the same as large groups at school.

However, I have only had to wear a mask for about 10-15 min at a time at most. The other day I had to wear a mask for about 2 hours. (surgical mask) About 1-1.5 hours in, I realized I was light headed, and feeling sick. I was oxygen deprived. That makes me nervous that children will not be aware of those symptoms and become very sick.

I just don't get people who drive around with their mask on while they are alone in the vehicle, windows rolled up and, presumably, vents closed. Regardless of your position on mask wearing, these people are doing it wrong.

I do this sometimes. If you are driving from one store to another and want to reduce how much you are touching your face and mask it makes sense to just leave it on. If you have a reasonably comfortable mask there isn't much reason to take it off if you are just going to put it back on in 5 minutes. Not much different than wearing a jacket in your car in the winter even though your car has heat so you shouldn't need it.

I've been wearing a mask at work since mid-March. I abhor it but it's how I provide for my family. I have two anti-mask folks in my home. My wife gets claustrophobic wearing a mask and my daughter has asthma. I understand where they are coming from but you get "used" to the mask. I think they are stupid as hell and most wearers might be doing more harm than good with the mask with how often they are adjusted and touched. However, we are required to wear them and I do.

I’m having to wear one back and forth to work and at work. I started with a cloth mask hated it, went to a neck gaiter much better but made me overheat fast. Picked up bandanas while I was home this time. Just completed my first leg, by far the most comfortable. Didn’t get hot was able to breath reasonably normal. Blah blah offers less protection, checks the box for requirements that’s all I care about. 5 more hours to go before this silly thing comes off.

I hate wearing a mask. HATE. I do in the grocery store or anyplace it is required and many places is it expected. I remove it the minute I'm outside or anywhere not required. I've tried many styles and prefer a cut down neck gator. I can't imagine a time when wearing a mask anytime not absolutely necessary would in any way be ok for me or ever become second nature. I fully respect anyone with a different idea or if you want me to stay away from you.

I'm probably claustrophobic or something else. I'm also probably ADD and many other things. I just grew up in a time before or a place where we hadn't yet fabricated names for every condition and excuses for every type of behavior.

I've been wearing a mask 12 hours a day since March. Only time I take it off is to eat my lunch. They are an evil torture device but I, like Mbryson make a living in it so when I start to get too irritated I think about my father and grandfather working in steel mills or doing actual physical labor and my panties become less bunched.

Well, you've been to my "steel mill" where we do actual physical labor for 10-12 hours a day and 6 hours on Saturday. We are required to wear a mask IF we cannot maintain distance. I go way out of my way to maintain distance and have yet to wear one at work. The majority of our machine operators wear a mask all day. There's a few guys very grumpy with me for not wearing one. I don't care.

My grandmother might have, she was smart and kept herself healthy enough to live past 99. Her husband, my grandfather, a leather-helmet Penn State football player was a "man's man" who worked physical labor around gas/oil, smoked a pipe and so on, died some 30 years before her.

They'd probably be just as divided as the rest of us... except my grandma would survive. 🤣

haha pretty good point! X-D

Teachers, at least a very small number of them, were protesting today. So I took a look at the numbers on the Utah department of health site.

Less than 5 children in Ut under 17 have died of COVID. Not sure what the number is since they report it as<5.
Teachers I would say range in age from early 20's to mid 60's. The 25-65 age group has a total of 90 deaths in Utah, with 10 being in the 25-44 age range where I'd assume a large percentage of teachers are.

With those kind of numbers, is it really sane to say it's risking teachers or student's lives to go back to school? Just for reference, there have been 86 deaths due to traffic accidents in Ut in 2020 and per the experts, the first 3 months of 2020 we didn't have COVID here so.......

Stop talking sense or the gestapo will come get you :spork:

Edit: Also fun fact just got back to Hawaii. They have had a few deaths in the last few days bringing the state total to 31  . They are freaking out and locking everything down again. Quarantines for interisland travel are going back into effect, conveniently on my first day back to work. 99% of new cases are isolated to one island Oahu, but blanket punishment to citizens of the other islands. Our daily flights are getting cut in half again. Yay me

Oh yeah and unemployment here is nearing 40%

When looking at the numbers, one thing that is too often ignored is that those deaths/cases is with restrictions in place. How many more would we have had if we followed a lot of people wish to just go about our lives as normal? How many more deaths would be acceptable to maintain that?

Very early on I said that public health officials are in a no-win situation. If they implement policies that are successful, they will be accused of over reacting ('only x number of people have died'). If they don't work, they will be blamed for not doing enough.

On a more personal note, my mother-in-law died earlier this week (not of COVID), but wife's siblings live in Philippines and Ireland. Her brother has chosen not to come for the funeral because of both the travel difficulties and the isolation requirements once he returns to work. Her sister should be on her way here from Ireland, but has had to jump through a lot of hoops to get a waiver of the travel bans into the U.S.

Considering the high number of cases in the US, remaining restrictions on people coming into the country make zero sense. We no longer can justify travel and immigration restrictions under the guise of trying to keep the virus out of the country.

Utah County has been back to normal for the most part. I've traveled most of the state this month and every place outside Slc is basically ignoring protocols. With no spike since the protests. I agree about public health officials being in a lose lose but the number of deaths in children are basically non existent even in those infected.
Public safety is a balancing act always. The balance is clearly worse if we keep kids out of school and hinder the overwhelming majority of young kids education progress.
