when i did mine on the cheap, i bought a relay and wired it to the ignition. when the key was on, both batteries charged, when off the second battery wss used for all the accesories. then i bought a new thing from painless and wired that in instead.

you need to decide just how often you are really going to use it. a harbor freight winch does the job, but if you really use it alot it will wear out. if your up to replacing brushes and solenoids, any winch will do. and are you really in a hurry to get where you want with your winch...

I would avoid towing anything-- I have towed another jeep off a trail, but i would tow nothing on the highway.
